Engaging Adult Learners with Innovative Strategies

In pursuit of better economic opportunities, adults are returning to school in record numbers. The stress of juggling work and family, compounded with anxieties about math and reading, can be crippling for even the most motivated adult learner. "To help students relax about learning math, we have impromptu laugh-offs in class to promote stress release," shares Phil Howard, a teacher at the Haitian Multi-Service Center. Phil participated in World Education's Managing Stress to Improve Learning project. Drawing on the strategies he learned, Phil developed math games and a comprehensive "Math Carnival" to help students overcome their math anxiety so that they can learn math. These activities, in addition to more conventional teaching strategies, are helping adults gain the skills and confidence that they need to succeed in meeting their goals.
