Over the last decade, the Government of Egypt has prioritized the reduction of adult illiteracy and provision of high-quality universal primary education to all children through its own efforts as well as successful multilateral partnerships between government, donors, and NGOs. As a result, Egypt has made strides in improving access to education for children and adults. There are still large numbers of illiterate women and children who are out of school, however, particularly in rural Egypt.

The goal of the USAID | Egypt Literate Village project is to ensure that women—especially mothers and primary-school children in targeted villages—have the necessary literacy skills for continuous learning and self-improvement.

The project is developing a model that breaks the cycle of generational illiteracy in rural Egypt by providing sustainable and effective learning approaches, fostering a culture of reading across communities and generations, and strengthening local community and governance structures. The model builds on the consortium’s extensive experience in evidence-based early grade reading, adult literacy, technology-enabled monitoring and evaluation approaches, and community mobilization.

Through the USAID | Egypt Literate Village project, World Education is working closely with the Ministry of Education (MoE) and Adult Education Authority (AEA) at national and local levels to improve women's and children’s literacy levels in Sohag, Beheira, and Assuit target villages.

World Education leads all activities relating to increasing rural mothers’ ability to contribute to their children’s primary education as a sub-partner to Save the Children. World Education works closely with AEA to implement a sustainable, evidence-based, context-appropriate, intergenerational literacy education for women that allows them to pursue other educational opportunities and/or become leaders and advocates in their communities.
