The overall goal of this program is to improve lower-secondary education teacher performance in the regions of San Pedro and Gbeke, Côte d'Ivoire, by:

  1. developing the capacity of the École Normale Supérieure (ENS) to revise the lower secondary pre-service teacher training curriculum with the intent to improve student learning outcomes in reading, mathematics, and life skills; and
  2. supporting the Department of Pedagogy and In-Service Education (DPFC) to revise their teacher supervision and inspection tools for informing improvements to the ENS pre-service teacher training program. Information gathered by the supervision tools will also be fed back to the Inspectorate General of National Education (IGEN) to facilitate better coordination between the three entities: ENS, DPFC and IGEN.

Our role on the program is to oversee and ensure the integration of appropriate gender and social inclusion approaches into the teacher training program, as well as the on-going supervision and inspection tools, in alignment with Ivorian gender and social inclusion policies and goals.

The project’s specific objectives are as follows:

  • Carry out an initial assessment of the existing lower secondary pre-service teacher training program at ENS, especially in the five disciplinary blocks related to reading, mathematics, and life skills;
  • Integrate gender and social inclusion approaches into the teacher training and supervision tools, particularly for those related to reading, math and life skills
  • Develop a lower secondary teacher training program that will be validated by all stakeholders ;
  • Develop and test supervision and inspection tools to promote feedback from the supervision and inspections of lower secondary teachers from the DPFC to the ENS;
  • Train ENS teacher-trainers on gender and social inclusion-sensitive teaching methods, the implementation of the revised curriculum and tools for the supervision and inspection of lower secondary teachers;
  • Train the Ministry of Education’s (MENA) pedagogical and general inspectors on the use of the developed supervision and inspection tools;
  • Provide a list of appropriate teaching and learning materials to be acquired for implementing the revised teacher training curriculum.
