Children First was a five-year program funded by USAID that worked to mitigate the impact of HIV and AIDS on orphans and vulnerable children in Zimbabwe by developing, implementing, and improving proven models for care and support of vulnerable children. Through Children First, World Education used child-focused, community-driven comprehensive programming that addressed children's needs and incorporated cutting edge technical innovations while valuing the unique contributions of resourceful, creative community responses.

Under the five-year strategic vision for the program, Children First established the following strategic objectives: 1) build on the strength of current programming by more established NGOs and help bring their programs to greater scale; 2) give direct care and support to local groups by providing assistance in program design and delivery, technical training and ongoing organizational strengthening; and 3) reach orphans and vulnerable children.

World Education implemented Children First in collaboration with John Snow, Inc. through the Bantwana Initiative
