Making Teacher Professional Development Accessible: The SABER Mais App

The USAID-funded bilingual education program in Mozambique, SABER, is developing digital continuous professional development tools to be used by school directors, school-based coaches, and teachers. One of these tools is the ‘SABER mais’ application. The app includes instructional videos that demonstrate essential teaching routines such as decoding, reading aloud, and vocabulary acquisition in three local languages and Portuguese, and audio to model the correct pronunciation of letter sounds in Elomwe, Emakhuwa, and Echuwabo.

The app works offline, all features are pre-installed, and runs on phones that possess Android 4.0 or higher. SABER distributed the app at district-level teacher trainings and assessed the effectiveness of this initial version in order to further improve the design and content for scale-up. This brief shares our findings.
