As students transitioning to college encounter texts of increasing difficulty, the need to approach reading tasks strategically greatly increases. Research has demonstrated that direct instruction in the use of reading strategies can improve the reading comprehension skills of students, and students lacking in these skills who receive such instruction often become indistinguishable from more skilled readers. 2006.
