The 27th Annual Conference of Parties to the United Nations Framework on Climate Change (COP27) is underway (Nov. 6–18) in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, with participation of more than 90 heads of state and representatives from 190 countries. Climate change is an enormous threat to our health, security, ecosystems, and economic prosperity, with the greatest consequences on marginalized populations. Nearly half of the global population is acutely vulnerable to the effects of climate change, with people in high-risk regions 15 times more likely than others to lose their lives due to floods, droughts, and storms.

COP27 focuses on practical actions to reduce carbon emissions and mitigate climate change to save lives, livelihoods, species, and the planet. World Education and JSI support COP27’s ambitious agenda reflecting these objectives throughout its work in the United States and more than 40 countries to improve health and education outcomes for communities, families, and individuals. Our work requires confronting the causes and consequences of climate change, environmental degradation, and biodiversity loss.

We hold ourselves accountable as we engage in advocacy and education efforts, acknowledge the multi-dimensional causes of climate and environmental change, and learn from others.
